Construction Industry Scheme

The Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) is a mandatory programme operated by HM Revenue and Customs to collect tax throughout the year from subcontractors working in construction trades.

Contractors must be registered for the scheme, submit monthly returns of tax deducted from workers to HM Revenue and Customs, and provide statements to subcontractors confirming tax deducted and paid over on their behalf.

Subcontractors should register for the scheme to ensure they do not pay a higher than appropriate tax rate.
